Some of you may remember my previous aquarium, if not it is here

http://www.ultimatereef.com/TOTM/2012_february/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This aquarium is now gone and sold to another crazy reef keeper in VD so it may pop up at some point.....

I took the decision this time to go for a full custom aquarium and so the new one is as follows:

Display tank: 160 x 160 x 110cm
2 main sumps
Automatic 200ltrs water change

This gives me close 4000ltrs of reef to play with

Main equipment as follows:

Lighting: AI Hydra 52 x 12
Main pump: Abyzz A400
Flow: Ecotech MP60QD x 4
Skimmer: Deltec TC3070s with self cleaning head, automatic drain and washing
Control: Full Apex system with dedicated router and LAN

The project has been in planning for around 2 years and we actually started the building work in December last year. The aquarium was finished in May and we started with water in early July but it's been a long hard journey with 90% of the work done by ourselves at home.

I will post up some pictures of the project journey but here to start is a strange animal that first occupied the aquarium for a few minutes as the water was 15º

More here:

And from the back here:

As you can see in order to Install the aquarium we had to make major modifications to the house. Removing 2 walls and then supporting the upper floor with new steel beams.

So the work started with me cutting out the raised concrete floor that used to be a place to feed cows on as the house is an old farm. Nice job but cutting out reinforced concrete is tough work:

Then it was time to measure out the aquarium and see how much wall had to be cut out.....

Due to the weight of the aquarium the base needed to be well made and substantial. The floor was dug out to around 40cm depth

Image

And then the pillars were made to the following specification

The weight of the water and glass is around 3250kgs plus the concrete pillars and equipment etc and we are close to 4000kgs.

Time for some light !

Image

And some plumbing parts

Image

And I started to collect some plate rocks for the aquascape

Image

And back to work to get that wall down !!!

And once the wall was out then the foundations could be dug out more to a final depth

Image

And then it was time to start to build the reinforcement for the steel pillars

The base concrete was made and we had to add the new steel beam to keep the house in one piece   removing so much of your house to get an aquarium in isn't such an easy task.....

Image

Then I got a friend to build the steel frames for the aquarium as it will be braceless, yep 110cm without glass cross support...
